On a night etched in cricketing glory, the Dubai Capitals clinched their maiden DP World ILT20 title, securing a thrilling four-wicket victory over the Desert Vipers in a high-octane final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Riding on stellar performances from Rovman Powell, Shai Hope, and Sikandar Raza, the Capitals successfully chased down a formidable target of 189, sealing the win in the penultimate over.
Batting first, the Desert Vipers posted an imposing 189/5, powered by Max Holden's sublime 76 and Sam Curran's unbeaten 62. Azam Khan provided late fireworks with a brisk 27, while Obed McCoy’s early breakthroughs and Sikandar Raza's crucial middle-over spell kept the Capitals in contention.
After last season’s heartbreak, the Capitals showcased resilience and determination, driven by their hunger for redemption. Chasing 189, they faced early setbacks with the dismissals of David Warner, Gulbadin Naib, and captain Sam Billings within the powerplay, leaving them reeling at 39/3. However, a composed partnership between Rovman Powell and Shai Hope steadied the innings.
Powell, embodying the spirit of a true match-winner, smashed 63 off 38 balls, while Hope anchored the innings with a crucial 43. Their 80-run stand reignited the Capitals' hopes, setting the stage for an electrifying finish.
With 65 needed off the final five overs, Dasun Shanaka and Powell kept the momentum alive before Sikandar Raza’s breathtaking 12-ball 34 turned the game on its head. Raza’s audacious hitting, including three boundaries off Mohammad Amir and a six in the final over, sealed the Capitals' victory at 191/6 in 19.2 overs.
Despite their valiant effort, the Vipers couldn’t break the Capitals' dominance, suffering their sixth consecutive defeat against the Dubai side.
The Capitals' success extended beyond the title, with Shai Hope clinching the Green Belt for Best Batter, amassing 529 runs in the season. Sam Curran, despite being on the losing side, took home the Red Belt for Most Valuable Player. MI Emirates’ Fazalhaq Farooqi claimed the White Belt (Best Bowler), while Muhammad Waseem secured the Blue Belt (Best UAE Player) for the third consecutive season.
